The AI glossary, in plain English.

Plain English

Mini model

A smaller, cheaper, faster version of an AI model, good enough for many everyday tasks.

A smaller model, often sold alongside a company’s flagship with a name like “mini,” “small” or “lite,” that costs less per use and replies faster. It’s usually weaker on hard reasoning but fine for sorting, short drafts and summaries.

Why it matters

For high-volume tasks, a mini model can cut per-use costs a lot. Test it on your own examples first, because “good enough” depends on the task.

At work

An online shop’s automation uses a mini model to tag incoming emails by topic all day, and saves a bigger model for tricky replies.

Think of it like the compact car on a rental lot: no good for moving day, fine for daily errands, and much cheaper to run.
